Real Madrid have appointed Jose Mourinho on a three-year contract until 2029 after several weeks of speculation.
The Portuguese coach was linked with Los Blancos following their two trophyless seasons, as Florentino Perez made arrangements to bring him back to the club.
Los Blancos made this decision after being dissatisfied with their former coach, Alvaro Arbeloa, who replaced Xabi Alonso on an interim basis.
A couple of weeks ago, Arbeloa insisted that he would not accept or work as an assistant coach under Mourinho following suggestions of a possible arrangement. He made it clear that he wanted a new chapter in his career.
Mourinho agreed to terms with the Real Madrid hierarchy just a few days before the club election, with Perez delaying the announcement until after the vote.
The club pushed for Mourinho’s signing despite negative opinions from some former players. Iker Casillas, who worked under Mourinho during their time together at Real Madrid, admitted that he has no personal problem with the Portuguese coach. However, he believes Mourinho is not the right manager to lead the team at this stage.
The former goalkeeper urged the club hierarchy to consider other options instead of Mourinho, insisting the club needs a major solution to repair the dressing room situation.
