Percy Tau is now a free agent following his short spell in Vietnam, which failed to convince the club to offer him a long-term stay and also damaged his chances of making the upcoming World Cup squad.

Percy Tau, along with another South African player, fell out of favour at the club, with both now heading back to Mzansi in search of a new chapter in their careers.

Tau made 22 appearances for the club, scoring once and providing four assists during his brief spell in Vietnam.

The former Al Ahly SC and Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. star arrived with high expectations, but he was released this week as part of a major squad overhaul at the club.

Although Tau won several trophies in Egypt, many believe he never fully developed into the player many expected him to become. His performances also saw him lose his place in the South Africa national football team squad.

The 31-year-old was left out of South Africa’s last Africa Cup of Nations squad and now appears unlikely to feature in the country’s final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Last year, Percy Tau was linked with a move to Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs F.C..

At the time, he was viewed as a possible marquee signing, but with his stock having declined in recent years, it remains to be seen whether Amakhosi would still consider making a move for the experienced attacker.
