Media personality and activist Ngizwe Mchunu has strongly rejected allegations that he set his own house on fire in a bid to gain attention and donations.
Mchunu’s house in southern Durban was reportedly torched by unknown individuals who were allegedly searching for him at the time of the incident. The blaze has since thrust him into the trending spotlight, with many — particularly social media users outside his core support base — accusing him of staging the fire.
Speaking after the incident, Mchunu expressed frustration at the claims, highlighting the personal impact on his family: “My children didn’t go to school. Their class assignments and other learning materials were burned down. But now people are saying I burned the house because I want attention.”
He dismissed the accusations as ridiculous, adding: “No matter how drunk one can get, you wouldn’t sleep and wake up and choose to burn your own house down.”
Mchunu insisted that something suspicious is happening and that there is a deliberate campaign to destroy him. He pointed fingers at his known adversaries, naming Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema and the LGBTQ+ community among those he believes are behind the attacks.
“I have a lot of enemies, including Julius Malema and the LGBTQ+ community. So it’s their time to celebrate,” he said. “But we’ll see who will end up on top.”
The activist maintained that the fire was carried out by unknown perpetrators and vowed to uncover the truth behind the incident.
The story continues to generate heated debate on social media, with opinions sharply divided between those who support Mchunu and those who remain sceptical of his version of events.
