Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has explained his decision to exclude Thembinkosi Lorch from the national team, despite the player’s recent impressive form.

Broos remains firm on his stance regarding the omission of the Al-Ittihad winger, even as debate continues among supporters over his possible return to the squad.

Speaking to Robert Marawa on MSW 947, Broos acknowledged Lorch’s improved performances but questioned how he would fit into the current World Cup-bound setup.

“First of all, I think it’s many supporters, because for the past four months people have been talking about him, but they forget,” said Broos.

“People forget what Lorch did in the last two or three years. He left Pirates — you don’t leave a team because you are a big star. He went to Sundowns, then left Sundowns…”

Broos said that while Lorch is currently playing well, selection decisions are not based on form alone.

“If you take Lorch, tell me who should be left out of the World Cup squad?”

“It’s very difficult for me to bring in a player who has not been with us and drop someone who has always been part of the team. Sometimes, the choice you make is not purely a sporting one.”

Broos also reflected on Lorch’s previous involvement with the national team, saying consistency and team balance remain key priorities.

“For me, it’s about the team dynamic. You can’t keep changing the squad every time a player hits good form and drop someone who has consistently been there.”
