For the Magpies, Callum Wilson and Joelinton both scored twice to keep them ahead of United on goal difference.
United had fallen to fifth place following a run of three league games without a win and cup commitments that had resulted in no Premier League win since mid-February.
Erik ten Hag’s men also had a score to settle with Brentford, who had humiliated them 4-0 in their previous meeting in August.
The Dutch coach was harsh in his assessment of his players’ attitude and passion in Sunday’s 2-0 loss to Newcastle, and he got the reaction he wanted.

In the hunt for a place in next season’s Champions League, both teams now have a three-point advantage over Tottenham and a game in hand.
“Hopefully, we’ll be able to build on that and get back to where we were a couple of weeks ago,” Rashford added.
