Petition calls for Colorado DA resignation over Elijah McClain’s case

A petition of resignation Colorado District Attorney Dave Young has been launched after fail bringing charges against police officers involved in Elijah McClain’s death. to the Blast, on August 24, 2019, 23-year-old Elijah Jovan McClain walked to the store to buy ice tea. He was wearing a ski mask because he was anemic and would sometimes get cold.

23-year-old Elijah was stopped by Aurora Police officers while he was walking home from the store. He was tackled by officers Nathan Woodyard, Jason Rosenblatt, and Randy Roedema and forcibly held to the ground. He pleaded for them to let him go saying he had done nothing wrong. Elijah was unarmed and had not committed any crime. The officers kept him down until paramedics injected him with ketamine to sedate him.

He can be heard telling them, “I can’t breathe. I have my ID right here. My name is Elijah McClain. That’s my house. I was just going home. I’m an introvert. I’m just different. That’s all. I’m so sorry. I have no gun. I don’t do that stuff. I don’t do any fighting. Why are you attacking me? I don’t even kill flies! I don’t eat meat! But I don’t judge people, I don’t judge people who do eat meat. Forgive me. All I was trying to do was become better. I will do it. I will do anything. Sacrifice my identity, I’ll do it. You all are phenomenal. You are beautiful and I love you. Try to forgive me. I’m a mood Gemini. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. Ow, that really hurt. You are all very strong. Teamwork makes the dream work. Oh, I’m sorry I wasn’t trying to do that. I just can’t breathe correctly.”

On the way to the hospital he suffered a cardiac arrest. He died seven days later in the hospital. The autopsy was inclusive on the cause of death. DA Dave Young did not bring charges claiming there was not enough evidence. He continues to defend his decision despite the case being reopened by Colorado Governor Jared Polis. Elijah’s death did not receive a massive amount of media attention until the recent protests shined a light on the case.

The petition states, “Elijah McClain was killed last summer by the Aurora Police and Fire department first responders. Rather than opening a case against those officers, DA Dave Young decided to do nothing and open no further investigations into the death of a 23-year-old young man.”

“Dave Young’s reasoning behind there not being enough evidence despite body camera evidence clearly outlining abuses of power by the police and fire department is that, “The forensic evidence revealed that the cause of death was undetermined. Specifically, the pathologist who conducted the autopsy stated that he was unable to conclude that the actions of any law enforcement officer caused Mr. McClain’s death.”

“We demand his immediate resignation and removal from any position of power within the government. It is clear his intention is not to serve the people who elected him, but to protect the police department and fire department at all costs.”

The petition has already received close to 25,000 signatures.
