Matome Robert Mahlatse Thoka, famously known by his stage name Limpopo Boy won The Brussel Danst Dance Battle in Belgium.

Limpopo Boy made a name for himself dancing for stars such as DJ Cleo, Sho Madjozi, Lady Zamar, Makhadzi and many other stars.

The dancer was competing in hip-hop, house, krump and ksaara categories.

Limpopo Boy is on his European tour and after Belgium his next stops are France, Switzerland, Spain, Sweden and Germany.

He caught up with TshisaLIVE to share his excitement after winning.

What made you enter this competition, and what does winning it mean to you ?

Before I entered, the whole of May I was planning my Europe tour. I got booked from Spain and France and then Belgium came on board, then Netherlands and Germany. The organisers from Belgium asked me to join the competition and also teach some workshops. I knew about the competition before I could fly there. I wanted try it because I’ve been winning and I believe in myself. Winning this award means a lot, it shows that it’s possible if you believe in yourself. Winning this award in a foreign a country is too much for me, it makes me push even harder.

When you started dancing, did you imagine it would be possible to travel?

I never thought I would be travelling the world, but after I understood the industry I believed I could. Also, after I moved from Limpopo to Gauteng and after getting attention from big artists, that’s when I started believing that one day I’ll be there. I was getting messages from different countries.

How has your journey been since you started as a dancer? If you had a chance to choose, would you choose it again?

It wasn’t easy as you know. Our black parents, they don’t really support dance until they see money. Also people have been discriminating, giving us negative vibes. In SA, especially in rural areas, you just have to go to school to make it. That was the mentality that we had back then.

You’ve danced for big names in the entertainment industry. What did you enjoy the most about working with the stars?

I enjoyed the vibe, I enjoyed learning and travelling and it was good fun. Above all else, I enjoyed learning from the best and I’ve learnt now I’m doing things on my own and I thank them for teaching me the hustle. They made me understand the industry and how to handle your brand, which is what I’m doing right now.

What’s next for Limpopo Boy?

I’m still touring in Europe. I had a sold-out workshop in Spain with more than 800 students; that was amazing. I also have a movie that’s playing in the cinemas right now called Dark Beauty.
