Correctional Services officials under fire after caught boozing at work
Correctional services officials under fire following photos surfaced on Internet showing them boozing at work while in uniform, the Western Cape Correctional Services Department are investigating the issue.
Photos of five officers drinking wine at work have gone viral on social media. They were allegedly taken in the first week of January.
Department spokesman Simphiwe Xako said they viewed the allegations very seriously.
“We always intend to uphold the highest security standards, especially among our correctional officials. Regional Commissioner Delekile Klaas has begun an investigation into the allegations.
“We will release the report immediately after identifying all the facts,” he said.
After seeing the photos, social media users were not impressed and said the officers were reckless and irresponsible.
Rotondwa Nevhutali wrote on Facebook: “This is irresponsible. We entrust these people to look after dangerous criminals and gangsters, but they are busy drinking at work.
“That’s why there are lots of cases of prisoners escaping and in some cases, officers being killed by inmates.”
Another Facebook user, Jade van Wyk, said the officers’ behaviour would affect their children most.
“If they lose their jobs, their children will suffer. I wish these people would think before they acted,” she wrote.”
Xako said the department expected the report into the incident to be completed within a week.
