Nico Williams rejects Barcelona, he extends contract with Athletic Bilbao

Transfer discussion between Nico Williams and Barcelona is broken for good, following player decision of extending contract with Athletic Bilbao.

According to Spain outlets, Nico Williams extends contract with Athletic Bilbao up to 2035, he rejected Barcelona twice.

Barcelona felt embarrassed by Nico Williams, who was initially ready to join them, but he wants assurance for being registered.

Barcelona faced an obstacle during a second attempt to catch his signature, Athletic president criticized them and vow to fight for player.

According to a report from Diario SPORT, citing club sources, Barça are “shocked and angry” at the developments after two weeks of intense negotiations without ever receiving any indication that Nico wanted to remain at the Basque Country and was only using the club’s interest as leverage to receive a better contract from his current club.

The report claims Nico and his entourage didn’t even bother informing Barça of his final decision to re-sign with Athletic, and that really infuriated the Catalans as they felt disrespected and used by the player and his agents.

Barça worked hard to get their finances in order and were ready to pay Nico’s release clause next week having reached full agreement with the player until 2031, and were left completely stunned by Athletic’s announced on Friday morning.

Williams used the exact same playbook to get a better deal out of Athletic last summer, and played Barça like a fiddle 12 months later once again to earn even more money in his new contract. It’s a painful end to an eventful saga, but it allows the Catalans to move on for good and try to sign someone who actually wants to play for them.
